Hairy Heart Part II
The warlock did not want to love anyone because he thought it would make him weak. He thought he'd make himself vulnerable by falling in love or loving anyone, for that matter. He thought he was setting himself up for heartbreak. He wasn't as cold and cruel as the story portrays him as in the beginning, he was only afraid. He was afraid of love. As humans, love is our strongest and most powerful emotion and it can be pretty scary. It's really confusing and hard to understand. It's unexplainable and the thought of it is often rather daunting and somewhat ominous.
The warlock isn't the only person to ever fear love. As humans, we become so afraid of vulnerability and heartache that we shield our hearts to the extent that nobody can get in. We deny how we feel and we push those feelings deep into the darkest depths of our soul where it's easiest for us to ignore them.
Think of how much love has been wasted; people always trying to escape it and move on to stop their heart breaking. People are afraid of love. Perhaps it's the common misconception that love "hurts" that is clouding our vision. What we don't realise is that it isn't love that hurts us. Love does not hurt. Loneliness hurts. Rejection hurts. Losing someone hurts. We all confuse these things with love, but in reality, love is the only thing in this world that covers up the pain and makes us feel wonderful again.
Yes, you can get hurt when you make yourself vulnerable to love. Being hurt - although it sucks - is inevitable. In life, getting hurt is a necessary path. You should not deny yourself this experience, but you also should not dwell in it. You need to go through it rather than around it in order to get over it.
We all love something or someone - we love a lot of things - but if I asked you to name all the things you love in life, how long would it take you to name yourself? Very few people today love who they are. We hold on to the past and all of our mistakes. Everyday, we remind ourselves of everything we are not and everything we can't do. We forget about our positive attributes; burying them in all the negativity we throw over ourselves. You can't litter negativity everywhere and wonder why you've got a trashy life. You can't hold on to the past forever. You need to move on. You'll never be able to love yourself if you hate the experiences that shaped you.
You'll never experience love in a healthy way if you are constantly holding on to the past and the things that hurt you. For many people, their past is an armour they can't take off no matter how many times you tell them the war is over. Nobody can help you through that armour and nobody can save you through those high walls you built around yourself. You need to let go and trust that there'll be someone there to catch you when you fall.
The warlock - like many others - was afraid to love. It scared him. He was the type of person that liked things he knew were concrete, like the ocean. He liked things he could be sure of. He liked things he could point to and know it was there and always would be there, like his money and, in a way: himself. He couldn't see love, he couldn't be sure it would be his forever. After seeing what it did to his friends, it seemed more like the plague than anything else. There wasn't a way for him to be sure of anything regarding love and I think that's precisely why he struggled so much with it. He couldn't touch it. He couldn't hold on to it and make sure it never changed. This insecurity along with everything he'd witnessed scared him stiff and so he did everything in his power to protect himself.
That emptiness you feel? The kind that feels impossible to fill? It can be filled with love. You can surround yourself with as many people as you'd like but if you don't love them and you're too guarded up to feel the love they have for you, you'd be better off spending the rest of your days alone.
The warlock got a taste of love when he put his heart back and it was magnificent. However, his heart was poisoned and influenced by the dark magic it once endured and it took over. It wouldn't allow him to feel love. He couldn't allow himself to spend the rest of his life with this magnificent woman if he would be unable to love her and experience the love she had for him. He couldn't see the sense in having someone he couldn't love. He decided it would be far less painful to love someone he couldn't have. He took out her heart and decided he would use it to replace his own so that he would forever remember the way she made him feel.
His hairy heart, however, was still tainted by the decisions he'd made in the past. It refused to be removed. It was adamant it would complete its duty of protecting its master from love and it put up a fight. He couldn't remove it with magic, no matter how hard he'd tried.
Removing the heart with magic would have been the safer option, but since the heart was too strong for this, he had no choice other than to cut it out.
By cutting his chest open and removing the heart, he was losing a lot of blood. He replaced his heart with the maiden's heart and in the last few moments of his life, he realised what he had done to her; the only woman he ever really loved. For the first time in his life, he felt remorse for something he had done. For the first time in his life, he mourned the loss of someone that was dear to him. For the first time in his life -he was in love - and just as quickly as it came, it was gone...
We don't realise that we aren't the only victims of love. It doesn't only hurt us. The warlock was so busy worrying about himself that he didn't realise he ripped out the heart of the maiden, ending her life. We all get hurt, yet we're so blinded by our own pain that we don't notice what the people around us are going through.
Love doesn't only hurt when it involves your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife. Love can hurt when you lose a friend. Love can hurt when somebody passes away. Love can hurt when you lose a pet. Love can hurt when people you love are fighting. Love can hurt when people you care about are suffering. Love can hurt when you're worried about the fate of somebody dear to you...
We over - romanticise situations. We don't realise that we aren't the only victims and there are people worse off than us. The warlock was so worried about being hurt by a woman that he decided never to love anyone and because of this, he was rude and pushed everyone that ever cared about him away. He pushed his parents away and didn't even care when they passed away. He lost his friends as well.
Love is beautiful and - if handled with care - it fixes us rather than breaks us down. It isn't as dangerous as we'd like to believe. As human beings, we make it dangerous by being ignorant to other people's feelings and by underestimating ourselves.
So, dear readers, I leave you with this...
Give, but don't allow yourself to be used.
Love, but don't allow yourself to be abused.
Trust, but don't be naive.
Listen, but never lose your voice.
Love when you are ready, not when you're lonely and remember that you aren't the only person on Earth with feelings.
